when you ask someone a question and they just stare at you blankly like you didn't even say anything
You ask your colleague if he's seen the Peterson file, and he just stares at you like you've spoken in Sumerian. You repeat it. Same stare. You start wondering if you've had a stroke, so you ask him what day it is. He finally blinks and says, "Sorry, what?" — which means he heard you perfectly fine the first time, he just wanted to make sure you understood how little your question mattered to him.
