when you're trying to get someone's attention and they act like they didn't hear you the first time so you have to repeat yourself
I watched my wife pretend not to hear me ask about dinner plans, so I asked again, louder. Then she suddenly had perfect hearing to tell me I was using the wrong tone. Apparently sound only travels one direction in our house, and it's exclusively toward me when I'm doing something wrong.
