I spent three minutes peeling a label off a jar like I was defusing a bomb, only to end up with what looked like a shredded birthday decoration and a thumb permanently adhered to the adhesive residue. The jar is now labeled "Mystery Product," which is fine, I'm sure it's either pasta sauce or industrial lubricant. My wife asked why I was standing at the sink making angry breathing sounds at a Trader Joe's label. I told her some things can't be explained, only survived.

You spend forty-five minutes describing a movie to your friend—the guy, the thing, the place where he does the stuff—while your brain screams the title at a frequency only dogs can hear. Finally it comes to you at 2 a.m. while you're brushing your teeth. You immediately forget it again.

I told my girlfriend I was thinking about nothing. She asked what kind of nothing—like peaceful nothing, or *something* nothing? Turns out there's a whole taxonomy of silence I'm failing at. Now when she asks, I just say "probabilities," which makes her madder but at least sounds intentional.
